The following sections contain a history of the 445th Bombardment Group (Heavy) from the date of creation through the final combat sortie in April of 1945.

This information comes from various sources:

  • National Archives in College Park, Maryland
  • Air War Europa by Eric Hammel

  • THE MIGHTY EIGHTH WAR DIARY by Roger A. Freeman, ISBN 1-85409-071-2

The following pages will contain references to mission numbers. Those missions are the 8th Air Force Field Order Numbers. For the period the 445th was flying sorties, all 8th AF mission summaries have been included. Those missions flown by the 445th will appear in the text as a small tabular entry. The mission number shown in the first cell indicates which mission number in sequence was flown by the group.

During the course of 16 1/2 months of operational flying, the 445th Bomb Group had two missions that showed the determination and dedication of the men who flew with the unit. Early on in the flights, the 445th was called upon to bomb the engine production facilities at Gotha.  Their route took them through some of the most heavily defended occupied territory, and ironically, near the city of Kassel where, seven months later, the 445th would be almost wiped out.

The 445th Bomb Group suffered their share of casualties throughout the war.  The link below will take you to a listing, in chronological order, of personnel lost due to enemy action, accidents or other causes.
