The P-47D was one of the first escorting fighters. Heavily armed with eight Browning .50 caliber machineguns (4 in each wing), the "Jug" as it was known, was used for ground strafing missions after the P-51 Mustang came along with the ability to escort the bombers to Berlin and back.
