Allied Aircraft

Daylight bombardment of Germany was thought by many to be impossible.  There were no fighter aircraft with sufficient range to escort the bombers to their targets and back to their home bases.  The massive formations of B-17 and B-24 aircraft proved that the idea was sound - it just took guts and determination to make it work.

Enemy Aircraft

The Luftwaffe started the war with some of the best combat aircraft in the world.  The famed Messerschmitt Bf 109 (often referred to as the Me 109) started it's service life in 1934 while the rest of the world was still flying bi-planes reflecting the designs of WW1. It remained in production throughout the war and served in all theaters of operations for Germany.
