Probably most effective defensive fighter due to firepower. Carried 2 20mm and 2 30mm cannon as well as 2 13mm machine guns in the nose. Later improvements included additional armored glass on the cockpit canopy, as well as on the sides of the fuselage around the pilot - enough to stop a .50 caliber round!
