The P-51 "Mustang", with it's Rolls Royce Merlin engine and external fuel tanks, became the first fighter to be able to make the round trip to Berlin and back with the bombers. Affectionately known as "Little Friends", the Mustangs halted most of the attacks before they could effect the bombers. Later on, the fighters were sent out ahead of the bombers on "fighter sweeps', clearing the German fighters ahead of the bomber stream.
