First flown in 1939, the B-24 had a longer range and bigger bomb load than the B-17. One of the unique features of this aircraft was the bomb doors "rolling" up the sides of the fuselage instead of hanging down in the slipstream. The 'Davis wing', named after the engineer who designed the airfoil, gave the B-24 a slightly faster airspeed than the B-17, but at the cost of a reduced service ceiling (could not fly as high).
