Boeing B-17E Heavy Bomber

Probably the most recognized aircraft of WW2, the B-17 "Flying Fortress", with eleven .50 caliber machineguns, was thought to be able to carry the air war to Germany without the need of escorting fighters.  Heavy losses in the early years of 1942 and 1943 proved that deep penetration missions would need fighter escort into and out of the target area.
