445th Bomb Group Website

This site is dedicated to the men who flew with the 445th Bomb Group out of Tibenham, England. No finer dedication can be found than the following - a dedication from a nephew about his uncle who flew with the 445th and made the ultimate sacrifice:

"This book is dedicated to my uncle, 2Lt Ralph T. Clapps, who was killed in action while serving as a copilot on a B-24 Liberator with the Eighth Air Force in England during WW II."

"On February 24, 1944, his ship was on a mission to Gotha, Germany, when a rocket fired from a German fighter hit the nose of his Liberator. My uncle and his pilot fought the controls of their plane long enough for the surviving crewmembers to bail out. In contacting the survivors of that ill-fated crew almost 60 years after the event, they said there was not a day they did not think of the heroic efforts of my uncle and his pilot, 1Lt Sidney Swanson."

The links on the left side of the page will take you to the major areas of the site. Under each of those will be numerous links to other pages.

INFO REQUESTS - This page contains a form to be used for specific requests for information about an individual, an aircraft, or a particular mission. This form will be relayed to the webmaster who will conduct the research.

LEST WE FORGET - This 3 section unit is a tribute to those who lost their lives during the war and afterwards. (1) Wall Of Honor - The names of those listed as Killed In Action.  (2) Missing - The names of those who were listed as Missing In Action (remains never recovered).  (3) Folded Wings - A sad but inevitable section containing the names of former unit members who have passed away. Almost 64 years have passed since the opening shots of World War 2 for the United States.

PHOTOS - This section contains the many photos submitted by former members and their families.  There are currently 4 sections: (1) Planes - Broken down by squadron, with model, manufacturer, and tail number info (if known). (2) Crews - crew photos, usually taken in the last training unit before going overseas, but some shots of crews with their aircraft. (3)  Base Photos - miscellaneous shots around the airfield with some shots taken during missions.  (4) Personal - photos and other images submitted by members and relatives

(3) Rosters - Listings of personnel by section or squadron. (4) Military Data - a listing of Military Occupational Specialties (MOS), rank insignia for both officers and enlisted, aircrew wings, and the different awards and decorations the men received.
